UPDATED: Illini fall in Western Amateur semis
CHICAGO — Illinois men’s golf team members Nick Hardy and Brian Campbell were ousted from the Western Amateur in the semifinal round Saturday.
Hardy faced eventual tournament champion Beau Hossler, who plays at the University of Texas, in the semis. Hossler birdied four of the first six holes to defeat Hardy 4 and 3.
Campbell was matched up against San Diego State’s Xander Schauffele and lost the match 1 up.
The championship match between Hossler and Schauffele was a rematch from June’s California Amateur, which Schauffele won.
The above is an update from an earlier story.
Despite double-digit seedings heading into match play in the Western Amateur on Friday, Illini Nick Hardy and Brian Campbell found paths to the tournament semifinals.
The two have a chance to make the Western championship an all-Illini affair.
In Saturday’s semifinal round, Hardy will face No. 9 Beau Hossler, a golfer for the University of Texas men’s team.
Campbell will take on No. 14 Xander Schauffele, a member of the San Diego State men’s golf team.
Hardy was seeded 12th and Campbell 15th entering match play, which started with 16 golfers.
But the two Illini didn’t let those numbers affect them.
Hardy defeated Australia’s Geoff Drakeford, seeded fifth, 6-and-4 in the round of 16 before topping No. 13 Scottie Scheffler, a University of Texas freshman, 5-and-4.
Against Drakeford, Hardy was 1-up through six holes before pulling away to finish the match on hole 14.
In the round of eight, Hardy never trailed against Scheffler, the 2013 Junior Amateur champ.
Campbell pushed past No. 2 Joshua Munn of New Zealand 2-and-1 in his first match Friday. He then took down Australia’s Cory Crawford, seeded seventh, in 23 holes in the quarterfinals.
Campbell’s match with Munn went 17 holes. The see-saw battle saw Campbell grab control on hole 13 and never look back.
His match against Crawford was even tighter. Campbell relinquished a 2-up lead over the final two regulation holes before birdieing the fifth playoff hole to advance.
Fellow Illini Charlie Danielson, seeded 11th, was defeated in the round of 16 by No. 6 Hunter Stewart 2-and-1.
