CHAMPAIGN — The 2019 Illinois baseball recruiting class is the last one for coach Dan Hartleb that came without the benefit of the Susan and Clint Atkins Baseball Training Center. The eight players Illinois signed Wednesday, plus three more Hartleb said he couldn't yet talk about, all picked the Illini without knowing a major facility upgrade was on the way.

UI roundup: Illini volleyball remains unbeaten

CHAMPAIGN — In a matchup of top-10 foes, Saturday night belonged to the Illinois volleyball team.

The eighth-ranked Illini won the first two sets over No. 10 Creighton, and while the Blue Jays were able to force a fourth set, that's as far as Saturday's match at Huff Hall went.

Pieters in contention at PGA Championship

Playing roughly three hours from where he honed his golf game at the University of Illinois, Thomas Pieters heads into the weekend at the PGA Championship in a good spot.

The 27-year-old former Illini is currently tied for fourth at the fourth major of the year, compiling a 7-under 133 through the first two rounds at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis.

Eight days after his wife strolled into the clubhouse at Lincolnshire Fields Country Club with news of her hole-in-one, JERRY GORMAN did the same thing Thursday in Champaign.

"As I was walking in, I'm thinking, 'Am I going to have to take a polygraph test?'" Jerry said. "It's got to be very odd. For it to occur eight days within each other ... crazy."

Former Uni High standout, current Illini wins first Twin City title

CHAMPAIGN — Varun Chopra never got too high or too low Sunday at the Twin City golf tournament.

Perhaps the most emotion he showed during an unseasonably wet and chilly final two rounds at Lincolnshire Fields Country Club was during his second time through the par-3 16th. His lengthy birdie putt from the fringe traveled mere inches to the left of the cup.
