1. Bren Spillane, baseball. The third-round MLB draft pick was one of three position players nationally to earn consensus (all six) All-American honors.

2. Alex Diab, gymnastics. A national championship on rings for the Glen Ellyn native was Illinois' third on the event and 58th total.

Meyer gains confidence from strong U.S. Open showing

CROMWELL, Conn. — Four years worth of advice from Mike Small resonated with Dylan Meyer this past weekend at the U.S. Open. The recent Illinois graduate spent some time each night before the next round at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club thinking about what his college coach would say.

"That kind of carried me to be where I was in the end," Meyer said.

Build it or 'get lapped'

The night before Friday's Hall of Fame Gala in Chicago, heavyweights from Illinois basketball gathered for a Champions Summit.

The message:

"We need to get busy," senior associate athletic director for development Howard Milton said. "You don't get passed in this, you can get lapped in the Big Ten in terms of facilities."

Meinhart delivers late to come up with third title

SAVOY — From the tee box, Derek Meinhart stared off at the 18th green.

He painted a picture in his head.

The crack of the pitching wedge striking the ball. The high-arching shot thumping down on the green within striking distance of the hole.

Five-time UI Open winner eyes first win as father

SAVOY — On the eve of Saturday's start to the UI Open, Tim Hoss Jr. couldn't help but smile.

Hoss had a passenger in the golf cart for 17 holes on Friday afternoon — his 3-year-old son, TJ. Of course, not all of that time was spent sitting down, as the rambunctious toddler got a kick out of playing in the sand-filled bunkers dotting the University of Illinois Orange Course.

A slew of Illini Hall of Famers took part in a special three-hour edition of "Saturday SportsTalk" live from Chicago.

Among the guests who joined Steve Kelly and Loren Tate: Josh Whitman, Lou Henson, Dana Howard, Jim Grabowski, Darrin Fletcher, Dave Downey, Tara Hurless, Kendall Gill, Bruce Douglas, Deron Williams, Nancy Brookhart Cherin and Scott Langley.
