UI gymnasts protect turf against UIC

   CHAMPAIGN  Travis Romagnoli and Yuval Ayalon combined to win 6 of 7 events Saturday as the University of Illinois men''s gymnastics team won its home opener over Illinois-Chicago at Huff Hall.

   Romagnoli, a freshman, won the high bar with a season-high score of 9.9, the floor exercise (9.65) and the parallel bars (9.65). He tied for first in the all-around with Ayalon, both Illini finishing at 57.05, a season-high mark.

   Ayalon won the pommel horse (9.7) and tied for first in the vault (9.5).

   Illinois outscored UIC 225.95-221.35.

   "The team really came out ready to perform," UI coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. "The team is coming together, and everyone is competing at a very high level right now."

   Winning 6 of 7 events for the second straight meet, Illinois improved to 9-2. The Illini visit Penn State next Saturday.
