UI gymnast gains honor

University of Illinois men's gymnast Jon Corbitt was named to the 1996-97 GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District V team announced Monday.Corbitt earned academic All-Big Ten honors a year ago and is a two-time winner of the George Huff Award for excellence in academics and athletics.

Corbitt, a junior co-captain, is having his finest year as an Illini.Twice this season he scored a career-high 9.85 on the high bar, the fifth-highest score in school history.He also has posted a 9.8 or better on the high bar in more than half of the team's meets this season.

Corbitt's previous best on the high bar was 9.5, a score he set as a freshman in 1995.He also scored a career high in the floor exercise, 9.70 on March 8 in a dual with defending national champion Ohio State.

Academic All-District members are candidates for the 10-member Academic All-America Team to be named later this month.
