Illini gymnast vaults to title

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Turns out Travis Romagnoli's routines were anything but routine. As a result, the University of Illinois gymnast walked away from Saturday's individual event finals a five-time All-American.

Capping a memorable stay at the NCAA Championships for both himself and the Illini, Romagnoli won the vault, finished second in the parallel bars and high bars and fifth in the floor exercise (top six finishers are All-Americans). On Thursday, the sophomore won the all-around.

"There's no reason to stop here. I can still improve," said Romagnoli, the first Illini to win the vault at nationals since Jack McCarthy in 1969.

Romagnoli on Friday helped the UI to a third-place team finish. He said the team's showing and his performance "were both rewarding. To win the all-around and do well as a team makes all the hard work worthwhile."
