UI men's gymnasts hit the books

They put the "student" in student-athletes.

The Illinois men's gymnastics team had the second-best grade-point average in the country among Division I programs and five illini were named All-America Scholar-Athletes, the College Gymnastics Association announced Tuesday.

Illinois with a 3.31 GPA, trailed only the brainiacs at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (3.55). Ohio State, nebraska and Iowa rounded out the top five.

Individually, John Corbitt (3.94 in Spanish), Brad Panozzo (3.87, cell and structural biology), Brandon Tucker (3.58, biology education), Travis Romagnoli (3.54, bioengineering) and Greg Cook (3.50, liberal arts and sciences) earned honors.

Last season, Illinois was third in the NCAA Championships, and Romagnoli won the all-around and vault titles.
