UI gym team ranked sixth

The Illinois men's gymnastics team, which finished third nationally last season, was ranked sixth Thursday in the NCAA's preseason coaches poll.

The Illini are led by Travis Romagnoli, the NCAA all-around and vault national champion, and senior All-American Kyle Zak.

"We are a little disappointed with the poll," UI coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. "We finished third last year and return our strongest gymnasts, but we will take this and use it as motivation for our guys during the season."

Iowa, last year's NCAA runner-up, is ranked first, Ohio State third, Penn State seventh and Michigan ninth.

Illinois opens its season with a mixed pairs exhibition Dec. 11 at Huff Hall.
