Strada makes most of shot

Without having to contend with defending national champion Travis Romagnoli of Illinois, Iowa junior Todd Strada won the Big Ten all-around gymnastics title Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

Strada defeated the nation's top-ranked competitor, Ohio State's Jamie Natalie, scoring 57.800. Natalie finished second with 57.625 points.

Strada helped Iowa to its highest team score of the season. But it wasn't enough to knock off the nation's top-ranked team, Michigan. The Wolverines won with 230.275. The Hawkeyes finished second with 229.475, and Ohio State was third with 229.250.

Romagnoli is out with an injury, as is freshman J.G. Ketchen. The Illini finished sixth in the team standings.

Advancing to today's individual competitions for the Illini were: Leo Oka (sixth, all-around and fifth, parallel bars); Jonathan Ham (fourth, floor); Kyle Zak (fourth, vault); Linh Hoang (vault); and Eric Nishimoto (vault).
