Illinois gymnasts capture birth

The University of Illinois women's gymnastics team has earned a berth in the Region III Championships, the NCAA announced Tuesday.

The Illini will be among six teams in the April 10 meet at Lincoln, Neb. The others are No. 4 Michigan, No. 7 Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arizona and Illinois-Chicago.

The top two teams in each of six regions and the top 12 all-arounders not on qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championships April 22-24 at Salt Lake City, Utah.

This is the second consecutive postseason trip for the Illini, who placed fifth in the Big Ten Championships last weekend.

"This was one of our goals heading into the season," UI coach Lynn Brueckman said. "Last year we achieved a milestone by qualifying. This year we won't be satisfied with just being there. We want to continue to raise the bar."
