Wiechmann bright spot for Illinois

LINCOLN, Neb. – Gina Wiechmann placed fifth in the all-around and Kim Berres was fifth in the balance beam but Illinois didn't survive the team cut at Saturday's NCAA Region 3 women's gymnastics championships at Nebraska.

The Illini, making their second consecutive postseason appearance, finished fifth with 193.1 points. Michigan won, followed by Nebraska.

"It was a really good meet and they wanted to finish higher, but overall I was pleased with the performance," UI coach Lynn Brueckman said. "Hopefully we can use this meet as a motivational tool for the years to come."

The top two teams from each regional and the top 12 all-arounders not on qualifying teams advance to the NCAA Championships on April 22-24. Wiechmann's score of 38.75 was second-best among all-arounders on nonqualifying teams.
