Illinois misses as team

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Illinois' men's gymnastics team, ranked fourth nationally, did not qualify for the team finals Thursday at the 59th annual NCAA Championships.

The Illini, who posted a 212.05 in the opening qualifying session, earned fourth. Top-ranked Oklahoma recorded the session's highest score at 218.30. California (214.55) and Penn State (213.625) also advanced to the finals from the first session.

UI senior All-American Leo Oka took second in the all-around with a 52.80 to qualify for the finals. Senior captain Linh Hoang qualified on the still rings, parallel bars and the vault.

Sophomore Bob Spelic also qualified on the vault and parallel bars for the Illini. Jon Ham, Scott Wetterling and Greg Cook made the semifinals on high bar. J.G. Ketchen will compete on rings after placing ninth.
