Ceremony for Brems set

Urbana native Karen Brems, a 2000 Olympian in cycling, will be inducted into the Tribute to Olympic Athletes on Saturday.

Brems' name will be inscribed on the Champaign Park District's Olympic monument at Dodds Park during a 10 a.m. ceremony, joining those of 28 other Champaign County Olympians.

The former Illinois gymnast competed in the road race and individual time trial events for the U.S. women's cycling team at the Sydney Games.

Brems began her cycling career in 1992 and within two years won a world championship in the individual time trial. She was a nine-time member of the U.S. World Championship team.

Brems lettered in gymnastics at the UI from 1981-84, earning All-Big Ten honors as a senior and twice being named an academic All-American.

Now retired from cycling, Brems lives in Redwood, Calif., where she works as a software engineer.
