Gymnastics squad ranked fifth

The Illinois men''s gymnastics team will begin the season as the nation''s fifth-ranked squad, according to the GymInfo/NCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

I think we deserve to be ranked, UI coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. We have strong returning letter winners and a strong recruiting class.

Seniors Sean-Paul Crawford and J.G. Ketchen and team captain Bob Spelic helped lead the Illini to eighth place at last season''s NCAA Championships.

Meantime, Hayasaki added two recruits for the 2002-03 season. Adam Pummer of Allentown, Pa., and Justin Spring of Burke, Va., have great potential, the UI coach said.

They could become two of the best gymnasts in Illinois history. I consider their potential to the likes of All-American Travis Romagnoli and Illinois Olympians Dominic Miniccuci and Charles Lake.
