Williams leads Illini gymnasts

Freshman Ashley Williams won the all-around title Saturday as the Illinois women''s gymnastics team kicked off the road season with a 193.750-190.550 loss at Minnesota.

Williams tied for first on the uneven bars (9.775) and placed third on the balance beam (9.775). She was fifth in floor exercise (9.725). Her all-around score was 38.750.

Freshman Lauren Newcomb finished third on the floor with a 9.750 score. She was fourth in the vault (9.675).

Freshman Margaret Dann was sixth in the floor. Dann and sophomore Kara Kapernekas tied for sixth on the beam. Junior Jana Gallagher was seventh in the uneven bars.

McAdam leads swimmers

Illinois'' Crystal McAdam won the 1,650-yard freestyle at the UC Irvine Invitational.

McAdam''s personal-best time of 16 minutes, 57.48 seconds was fifth all time for the UI.

The Illini finished 1-2 in the 1,000 free, with Jen Peters first in 10:16.36, followed by Kirsten Koepcke. Ilkay Dikmen and Alison Czmarko went 1-2 in the 400 individual medley.

We had a great night, UI coach Sue Novitsky said. We swam really well, much better than this afternoon, and ended it on a great note with Crystal''s swim. Hopefully we''ll take (Saturday''s) performance and carry it into (today''s) relay meet.

Jessica Aveyard won three races. Czmarko took the 100 backstroke and Dikmen the 100 breaststroke.
