Two Illini first in nation

Two Illinois men''s gymnasts are ranked first in the nation in their events. Ben Newman has compiled the highest season scoring average in the pommel horse (9.725), and Justin Spring is No. 1 in floor exercise (9.537).

Yoshi Hayasaki''s Illini, who were No. 3 in the preseason poll, are third in the first ranking of the regular season. Through two meets, Illinois is averaging 213.600 points. Penn State, which defeated the Illini on Saturday, rose from No. 5 in the preseason poll to No. 1 with a 217.375 average.

Illinois also ranks among the top four teams in four events: second in floor exercise, third in pommel horse and parallel bars, and fourth in high bar.
