UI gymnasts earn invite
The Illinois men''s basketball team isn''t the only squad heading to a regional soon. The UI women''s gymnastics team, led by coach Bob Starkell, earned a bid to the South Central Regional in Tucson, Ariz.
The invitation to the April 3 event, which was announced Monday, is the first under Starkell, who is in his fifth season at the school.
"It''s a great feeling for this team to have the opportunity to compete at NCAA regionals at the University of Arizona," Starkell said. "We''ve been extremely close to making the NCAA Championships but have narrowly missed these past few years."
The Illini will be joined by Utah, Florida, Arizona, Arkansas and Illinois-Chicago.
The top two teams and the top two competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional receive an automatic berth to the national meet April 15-17 in Los Angeles.
UI sophomore Andre English was named the Big Ten men''s outdoor track athlete of the week after a strong performance last weekend at the Texas Southern Relays.
The Dayton, Ohio, native won the 100-meter dash and the 110 hurdles, setting personal bests in both events.
Illini fall on road
Chad Frk doubled and Drew Davidson tripled to help Illinois rally, but Winthrop went on to a 9-2 victory Monday in a nonconference baseball game at Rock Hill, S.C.
UI starter Ted Rowe (1-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits in 7 innings.
The Illini (4-8) collected nine hits.
