UI''s Pomeroy, Williams fall short

LOS ANGELES – Cara Pomeroy couldn''t come up with another perfect score at the NCAA Championships on Thursday night.

Pomeroy, who became the first Illinois gymnast to record a 10.0 at the South Central Regional, scored a 9.800 to finish 28th on the uneven bars during the evening session.

The Illini''s other NCAA qualifier, Ashley Williams, was 19th in the all-around at 38.450.

"Both young ladies had a good showing tonight," UI coach Bob Starkell said. "It''s a shame because their weakest event today – the uneven bars – is normally the strongest event for each."

Several Illini teammates were in attendance at Pauley Pavilion.

"All the girls – not just Ashley and Cara – were able to get a good look at the ultimate goal: the NCAA Championships," Starkell said. "They''ve seen it. Now they know where they need to go and what they need to do to get the whole team to this point in the future."
