WEST POINT, N.Y. – Illinois'' men''s gymnastics team picked a good time to set a school record.

The Illini advanced to today''s team finals at the NCAA championships by winning its six-school preliminary session with a record score of 225.250. Justin Spring led the way, winning the high bar and the parallel bars.

"As a team we had our ups and downs, but for the most part, we were really confident we could hit our routines on the first day," Spring said.

The Illini face Oklahoma, California, Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State in today''s finals.

"We really need to clean up a few bobbles and errors that we had tonight," said Ben Newman, who tied for first in pommel horse. "There are a couple skills we held back on to keep guys at their peak for (today). Hopefully by making those adjustments, we should be in good shape."
