Spring earns national title

INDIANAPOLIS – Justin Spring scored a 9.3 on the high bar Friday, becoming the first Illini athlete to win a U.S. Gymnastics title.

Spring, who totaled 18.75, was named to the U.S. National Team and might compete at the World Championships on Nov. 21-27 in Melbourne, Australia.

"Being on the National Team was something I've dreamed about my whole life. This will give me some opportunities to compete on an international level," said Spring, who also placed third in vault, sixth in parallel bars and seventh in floor exercise.

"Winning the high bar was just icing on the cake, but making the National Team was my focus coming in. Taking home the gold medal just tops it off," Spring said.

Despite something being torn in his shoulder, Todd Thornton cruised to his first all-around title. He finished with 106.9 points, more than a point ahead of David Sender (105.500). David Durante was third with 105.200.

The victory gave Thornton a spot on the team for the World Championships. Five additional members will be chosen after a training camp in October.
