Bob Starkell has resigned as University of Illinois director of gymnastics, the school announced Monday.
Starkell served on the UI women's gymnastics staff for 17 years, including the last 11 as head coach.
A press release from the school said Starkell resigned for personal reasons. Illini sports information director Kent Brown, citing UI privacy rules on personnel matters, declined further comment.    
"That's as much as I can pass along," he said.
Starkell did not immediately return a phone message to his home.
Kim Landrus was named interim women's head coach for the 2010-11 season. She has been on the UI women's staff for eight years, including the last four as associate head coach.
Amy Kruse will remain as an assistant, and a search will begin immediately for a second assistant, the school announced.
Starkell was named UI Director of Gymnastics in April 2009, with oversight duties for both the men's and women's programs.
He received the 2009 National Coach of the Year award after leading the Illini women to their first NCAA Championships appearance, He also was a three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year (2005, 2009, 2010).
