News you can't leave work without:
Jay Santos, a former assistant at Iowa State and Ohio State, has joined the Illini staff for the 2010-11 season as a visiting assistant coach.
The hiring was announced Wednesday by UI interim head coach Kim Landrus. "His passion for the sport, combined with his technical knowledge and experience, will be a great fit for our program," she said.
Santos will serve as the head bars coach while assisting and spotting on other events. He will also have a role in on- and off-campus recruiting.
Santos spent the previous four seasons at Iowa State, where he was the recruiting coordinator and bars coach. During that span, the Cyclones made four consecutive NCAA regional appearances, with a co-runner up finish at the 2007 Central Regional. Under his guidance, the Cyclones produced two Big 12 Conference bars champions.
Before that, Santos spent two seasons as an assistant at Ohio State, where he coached bars and floor exercise. He coached five Buckeyes to All-Big Ten honors.
