Freshman throws his weight around, sets record

CHAMPAIGN – Davis Fraker wasted no time making an impact at Illinois.

The freshman from Peachtree City, Ga., set a school record in the weight throw on his first college attempt. His throw of 66 feet, 10 3/4 inches was good for first place in Saturday's track and field indoor meet against Iowa at the UI Armory.

"Davis is an outstanding athlete," UI coach Mike Turk said. "He showed today that he's all business. He's mentally very mature."

Fraker also won the shot put.

"It was great to come out and hit that big first throw," Fraker said. "Training has gone really well this fall, so it's a good feeling to get a couple of wins at the first meet."

Iowa beat the Illini 83-74.

Kyle Engnell won the mile, Colin Mickow won the 3,200 and Joshua Hodur won pole vault.

In women's gymnastics:

Illini second. Allison Buckley and Kelsey Joannides tied for the all-around title, leading the No. 17 Illini to a second-place finish at the season-opening meet in Louisville, Ky.

Illinois (193.650), which got individual victories from Joannides (beam) and Jaclyn Kantecki (bars), finished behind host No. 24 Kentucky (194.350).
