Ribeiro honored; men's tennis wins

PARK RIDGE — Illinois senior Daniel Ribeiro, who successfully defended his U.S. title in pommel horse last weekend, was named Big Ten Men’s Gymnast of the Week on Monday.

The Chestnut Ridge, N.Y., native won the event at the U.S. Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas with a two-day combined score of 31.400. Ribeiro also earned the pommel horse gold medal at the 2010 U.S. Visa Championships.

The Big Ten weekly honor was the second of his career and the first this season.

Men’s tennis trips Duke. No. 16 Illinois handed No. 14 Duke its first loss of the season, 4-2, Monday at Atkins Tennis Center. Abe Souza (No. 3 singles), Roy Kalmanovich (No. 4), Stephen Hoh (No. 5) and Bruno Abdelnour (No. 6) won for Illinois. Duke took the doubles point.

Dennis Nevolo’s match at No. 1 singles was abandoned with Novolo trailing 6-7, 5-3.
