Mizoguchi strikes gold

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico — Illinois gymnast Tyler Mizoguchi won the gold medal in parallel bars on Sunday at the Puerto Rico Cup.

The Illini senior-to-be, who was competing for a six-member U.S. team, scored a 15.225 for his second medal of the 12-nation meet. Mizoguchi, the reigning NCAA champion in parallel bars, earlier claimed a bronze medal in the pommel horse.

Colombia’s Jorge Giraldo was the silver medalist in parallel bars with a 15.100 score, while Puerto Rico’s Luis F. Vargas (14.900) captured the bronze.

UI coach Justin Spring and Grigor Chalikyan of Huntington Beach, Calif.-based SCATS Gymnastics served as the U.S. coaches. The Americans won the team silver medal on Friday.
