Spring wins national coaching honor

CHAMPAIGN — After leading the Illinois men's gymnastics team to its 10th national title and first in 23 years, Justin Spring on Monday was named the 2012 National Coach of the Year.

Illinois assistant coaches Daniel Ribeiro and Ivan Ivankov were named Assistant Coaches of the Year.

"The coaching award is deserving for this staff as a whole," said the 28-year-old Spring, the youngest coach to win the award. "It's really a collective effort. My assistant coaches and I format team decisions together. I'm very honored because these guys put in so many hours, and it's great to see them get the recognition they deserve."

The Illini compiled a 28-2 record and won their fourth straight Big Ten championship this past season. Spring was named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the third straight year.
