U.S. Gymnastics: The Inside Scoop

At stake: A field of 15 men and 15 women will compete for spots on the five-member teams that will represent the United States in the London Olympics

Illini connection

C.J. Maestas

Named Illini male Newcomer of the Year for all sports after stellar freshman season. Became the Illini's first NCAA champion in still rings for a team that won program's first national crown since 1989. Three-time All-American (right) also tied for second in the all-around. Retained his spot on the U.S. Senior National Team after placing fourth in rings and 12th in all-around at the Visa U.S. Championships.

Paul Ruggeri

Nine-time All-American capped Illini career in April by winning NCAA title in vault, his fourth national collegiate crown. Was the 2012 Nissen-Emery Award winner, given annually to the top men's collegiate gymnast. Earned a silver medal in floor exercise and finished seventh in all-around at the Visa U.S. Championships to clinch a spot on the U.S. Men's Senior National Team for the sixth time in his career.

David Sender

Former two-time NCAA vault champion at Stanford served as Illini volunteer assistant coach last season. In 2008, he was U.S. all-around and vault champion. Earned spot on U.S. Men's Senior National team for 12th time in his career after finishing 11th in all-around and top nine in three individual events at the Visa U.S. Championships.

Of note

Illini coach Justin Spring, a member of the 2008 U.S. men's Olympic bronze-medal team, did not accompany the Illini contingent to San Jose. Spring and his wife, Tori, are expecting their first child, with a due date of July 3. UI assistants Ivan Ivankov, a two-time Olympian for his homeland Belarus, and Daniel Ribeiro made the trip.
