UI roundup: Track and field has solid debut

CHAMPAIGN — The Illinois men's track and field team compiled 207 points, easily ouptacing the nine-team field on Saturday at the Armory on the UI campus to win the Illini Open title in the Illini's first indoor meet of the season.

Illinois placed first in nine events — David Kendziera in the 60-meter hurdles, Devin Quinn in the 60-meter dash, Joe Haight in the 200, Aaron Harris in the 400, Denis O'Callaghan in the 800, Garrett Lee in the 3,000, Parker Deloye in the high jump and Cooper Jazo in the pole vault and the 1,600 relay team — to finish well ahead of runner-up Southern Illinois (1191 / 2).

In women's track and field

Choquette shines. Urbana graduate Nicole Choquette was one of five Illini to win events on Saturday at the Illini Open, helping Illinois place second at the 10-team meet.

Choquette won the 600-meter run in 1 minute, 33.47 seconds.

Other first-place finishers for Illinois — which wound up with 1361 / 2 points as Southern Illinois won the meet with 147 points — included Rebecca Craddock in the 800, Jayla Stewart in the 60, Sara McKeeman in the pole vault and Briana Driver in the long jump.

In men's tennis

Trio fares well. The Illinois men's tennis team had its first match of 2018 on Saturday in Atlanta at the MLK Invitational, facing off against Georgia Tech in five singles matches and two doubles matches.

Alex Brown, Zeke Clark and Caleb Chakravarthi won singles matches for the Illini, while Brown and Chakravarthi and Clark and Vuk Budic won doubles matches.

In women's gymnastics

Walsh wins opener. The Illini emerged with a first-place finish at a four-team meet in Piscataway, N.J., as two Illini earned individual titles in coach Nadalie Walsh's debut at Illinois.

Karen Howell won titles in the floor (9.800) and the bars (9.875) to pace the Illini. Kasey Meeks came through with a vault title (9.825). Illinois compiled a score of 195.100 to defeat Yale, Rutgers and Southern Connecticut State in the Illini's season opener.

In swimming

Two Illini win. A pair of Illinois women's swimmers each won an individual event, but the Illini fell short against Iowa and Notre Dame in Iowa City, Iowa.

Samantha Stratford won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 5.65 seconds, while Ashley Aegerter won the 200 breaststroke (2:17.16), but the Illini lost 198-102 to Iowa and fell 213-84 to Notre Dame.
