HARTFORD, Conn. — Illinois senior Daniel Ribeiro won a gold medal in the pommel horse and teammate Paul Ruggeri finished in the top four in three events Friday night at the Visa Championships [--] the national championships of USA Gymnastics.
Ruggeri, who finished eighth in the all-around with a 173.300 score, earned an automatic spot on the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team.
HARTFORD, Conn. — Illinois’ Daniel Ribeiro, Paul Ruggeri, Chad Wiest and Tyler Mizoguchi and former Illini Wes Haagensen advanced to the finals of the Visa Championships after solid opening-night performances Wednesday.
Ruggeri’s all-around score of 86.600 was good for ninth place, while Haagensen (86.050) tied for 11th and Mizoguchi (82.850) was 29th.

Seniors Daniel Ribeiro, Paul Ruggeri and Chad Wiest and junior Tyler Mizoguchi are scheduled to begin competition Wednesday. Current U.S. National Team members — including Ruggeri, Mizoguchi and former Illini Wes Haagensen — earned automatic entries. Ribeiro and Wiest qualified by finishing in the top 23 on July 10 at the Men’s National Qualifier in Colorado Springs, Colo.
URBANA — Illinois gymnasts Daniel Ribeiro and Chad Wiest qualified for the USA Gymnastics Visa Championships next month in Hartford, Conn.
The Illini seniors-to-be were among 23 gymnasts to advance out of the U.S. Men’s Qualifier on July 10 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Ribeiro finished 10th in total points with 44 and was the runner-up in pommel horse with a score of 15.250. Wiest placed 17th with 32 points. His top performance was in floor exercise, in which he tied for eighth at 14.500.

CHAMPAIGN — The Illinois women’s gymnastics and volleyball programs were named as host sites for upcoming NCAA tournament regionals.
The gymnastics team will host a regional for the first time in 2012. Illinois will be one of six host sites, and for the first time the Assembly Hall will be the site of a women’s gymnastics competition. The date is April 7, 2012.

ATHENS, Ga. — Senior Marek Czerwinski and sophomore Dennis Nevolo, ranked 11th nationally in doubles, won their opening-round match Thursday, defeating brothers Chris and Marcel Thiemann of Mississippi 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
In singles action, Nevolo lost 6-3, 6-2 to 12th-ranked Eric Quigley of Kentucky.
Libero Jennifer Bonilla of Reseda, Calif., and middle blocker/right side hitter Liz McMahon of Liberty Township, Ohio, were among 21 players chosen through tryouts held between February and April.
