Big Ten honors volleyball's Ward

PARK RIDGE – Colleen Ward, who led the Illinois volleyball team to a pair of victories last weekend, was selected Big Ten Player of the Week. The conference announced the honor Monday.

The junior outside hitter produced a double-double (16 kills, 10 digs) on Friday in a five-set win against Penn State that ended the Nittany Lions' record 65-match Big Ten winning streak.

On Saturday, Ward had a match-high 14 kills and hit .444 in 27 swings in a 3-0 sweep of Ohio State. The Naperville native, who also contributed eight digs against the Buckeyes, finished the weekend with averages of 3.8 kills and 2.3 digs per set.

The Big Ten weekly award is the first of Ward's career. She is in her first season at the UI after transferring from Florida.

Illini up to No. 7. Illinois moved up two spots, to No. 7, in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll. The rankings were announced Monday.

The Illini (10-2) gained ground after defeating then-No. 2 Penn State and Ohio State last weekend at Huff Hall. Illinois is one of five Big Ten teams in the Top 25, including No. 4 Penn State.

Mehnert shines in triathlon. Illini swimmer Michelle Mehnert completed her triathlon season with a fourth-place finish at the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

She finished in 2 hours, 21.10 seconds, about 10 minutes behind this year's champ. She was the second-fastest swimmer in the 20-24 age division for females.
