After a freshman season that included numerous accolades, Rayvonte Rice has considered transferring from Drake.
At least for now, it appears the Centennial product will remain in the Missouri Valley Conference.
"I'm thinking I'm probably going to stay here at Drake. I kind of was looking around, not to beat around the bush," Rice said Thursday. "But I'm going to see how it is here for next year, get better, make my teammates better, go from there."
Rice was named to the MVC's All-Newcomer and All-Freshman teams and was an All-MVC honorable mention selection.
Kareem Richardson, a former Rantoul standout, was the assistant coach that recruited Rice to Drake. On Thursday, Richardson was hired as an assistant at Xavier.
"He's a big reason I came here. Like I told my mom, Xavier was an (transfer) option," Rice said. "Now I'm going to make that kind of relationship with one of the other coaches. They always make sure I'm staying on the right track and want the best out of me."
"We were really disappointed to hear that he (Richardson) is leaving. He's one of the big reasons we went to Drake in the first place," said Rhonda Rice, his mom.
Rice was the 2010 News-Gazette All-State Player of the Year. He currently is enrolled in summer classes at Drake.
"We've got everybody coming back except for one senior," he said. "We should be pretty good. I'm looking forward to it."
