Three-point project: Southland

Three-point project: Southland

Perhaps you've heard of the best player in school history. A guy who went on to do OK in the NBA, while winning six titles during a Hall of Fame career. Scottie Pippen got to shoot three-pointers one season for the Bears and was extremely efficient at it. Pippen hit 23 of 40 three-pointers (58 percent). His accuracy is by far the best in school history.

In a Sun Belt Conference opener against Western Kentucky on Dec. 27, 1997, with his team down two with three seconds left, Matt Sundblad hit a three-pointer from just inside halfcourt to win the game at the buzzer.

On March 2, 1989, McNeese State beat Stephen F. Austin 87-85 in two overtimes, sparked by Dwayne Davis' three-pointer in the second overtime. The win put the Cowboys into the Southland Conference tournament, which they would win to reach the NCAA tournament.

During an otherwise-miserable 1990-91 season, Kelvin Hamilton gave the Colonels a reason to smile. Playing at Air Force, Hamilton set a school record with nine three-pointers. Of course, the Falcons won the game 103-94, one of 25 losses for Nicholls State. The Colonels got even the next year, beating Air Force 75-74.

Jermaine Wallace's buzzer-beater topped No. 15 Iowa 64-63 in the first round of the 2006 NCAA tournament. The shot capped a comeback from 17 down with 8:29 remaining.

Donald Cole hit a three in the final seconds of overtime against Stephen F. Austin in the 2003 Southland Conference Tournament final. The 69-66 victory earned Sam Houston State its first NCAA tournament berth.

Daryl Cohen's off-balance, buzzer-beating three-pointer beat Penn State 69-66 on Dec. 16, 2007.

Antonio Burks hit a three-pointer with 4.9 seconds remaining to beat UT-Arlington 69-68 in the semifinals of the 2004 Southland Conference Tournament.

On Jan. 31, 1998, current head coach Scott Cross made a shot from past halfcourt against McNeese State in a 75-72 win.

On Dec, 22, 2008, Kevin Palmer drained a winning three at the buzzer from just inside halfcourt to give the Islanders an 80-79 OT victory over Georgia.

On March 9, 2011, in a Southland Conference tournament quarterfinal, the seventh-seeded Roadrunners beat second-seeded Northwestern State 97-96 en route to the NCAA First Four, where they defeated Alabama State (70-61) for the school's firs NCAA postseason victory in any sport. Devin Gibson's three-pointer with 1:08 remaining tied the game as UTSA rallied from a 14-point deficit with 7:50 left.

Brent Benson liked hitting the most threes in school history so much that he did it twice. In just over a month. On Nov. 26, 2008, Benson had nine three-pointers against Wyoming. On Dec. 30 against McMurry, he matched his record total. In 58 career games, Benson is third on the school's career three-point list.
