Morgan commits to Illini basketball

CHAMPAIGN - John Groce and his Illini staff have secured a big commitment.

Maverick Morgan, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound center out of Springboro, Ohio, said this morning he has given a verbal commitment to Illinois. The 2013 prospect arrived on the UI campus for a visit Tuesday. The Illini staff was able to lock up the commitment, and Morgan will nix a visit to Wisconsin.

"I've known this staff for over a year now, from when they were back at (Ohio University)," Morgan said by phone. "I really love these guys. I think it's going to be great to play for them."

Morgan said his final list also included Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Dayton, Xavier and Minnesota.

"Everything clicked (at Illinois)," he said.

Awesome job Coach Groce and staff!   This kid physically reminds me a lot of a young Illini who just left who is soon to be a NBA lottery pick.    The comments I have read on other sites really impress me as well.  Here are a couple:

“His rate of development has really been impressive. All the way through, he’s turned out to be better than what we thought he’d be,” Holtrey said. “His freshman year, he was better than we thought he’d be. His sophomore year, he was better. And this summer, he’s gotten better."

“He’s got great, soft hands — both his right and left. And there’s a toughness about him. He can bang with anybody.”

Holtrey said Morgan has much better agility than a typical big man.

“When you test his flexibility, he’s extremely flexible. You time him in the 100-yard dash, and he’s fast. He’s got good hands. And he’s young — he just turned 16. He’s got great upside,” Holtrey said."

Welcome to the Illini Nation young man!

Oh my goodness - he's NOT from the Chicago Public League...  Great stats - I hope he does well.

If John Groce likes him, that's all I need to know. Welcome. Great to get you in orange & blue. Nice to see some cross border poaching going on. Hopeful more of what's to come.
