Rich Adams

Rich Adams, one of Lou Henson's first star basketball players, celebrates his 56th birthday today. A standout at Cincinnati Colerain High School, Adams scored an all-time-record 469 points in 18 games (26.1 points per game) as a prep senior in 1974, finishing as the school's second-best career scorer. He originally was recruited to Illinois by fellow Cincinnatian and assistant coach Tony Yates. As an Illini freshman, Adams averaged 5.1 points and 4.1 rebounds a game. His best season was as a sophomore, when he contributed 15.9 points and 5.6 rebounds including a game-winning shot at Nebraska in Henson's first game as Illinois' coach. Adams was joined in the starting lineup by Levi Cobb, Ken Ferdinand, Audie Matthews and Steve Lanter in '76-77, a season in which he averaged 12.9 points. That season he tallied 39 points against Arizona on 16-of-22 shooting from the field. As a senior in '77-78, Adams poured in 10 points per contest, finishing as Illinois' No.6 all-time scorer with 1,223 points. Adams was selected 86th in the 1978 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs but never played in the pros. In 2010, he was inducted into the Greater Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame.
