Colangelo: Talking USA hoops

Jerry Colangelo, speaking from California on Saturday morning, indicated NBA coaches Gregg Popovich (San Antonio) and Doc Rivers (Boston) might be atop the list of USA Basketball coaching candidates if Mike Krzyzewski elects not to return. Popovich was 2012 NBA Coach of the Year.

"If it becomes 100 percent certain that Coach K has closed the door, we'll have a decision to make," said Colangelo, USA director who has replaced the committee system with one-man oversight.

"Jim Boeheim (Syracuse) has probably given more time to USA Basketball at all levels, not just the Olympics, than anyone, and he has made it clear that he is retiring. A lot of names are being thrown into the hat, including Tom Izzo. Next up is the World Cup in Spain in 2014."

Colangelo anticipates no limit on the age of Olympic basketball participants before 2020, if then.

As for the dispute comparing the 2012 champions with the Dream Team in 1992, Colangelo said:

"We had a team of players in their prime who wanted to come back, whereas half the players on the 1992 team were on the downside of their careers."

Even without such injured stars as Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh and Derrick Rose, Colangelo seemed firm in his minority opinion that the new Olympic champions were better.
