Klee's preseason Top 25

Klee's preseason Top 25

Paul Klee again will be a voter in the men’s basketball AP Top 25. Our basketball writer’s preseason ballot is due in late October – but here’s how it is shaping up:

1. Indiana — We’ve been thinking about the Hoosiers a lot. A whole lot. Enough to make them No. 1.

2. Louisville — Rantoul product, current UL assistant Kareem Richardson: “(Peyton) Siva’s the real deal”

3. Kentucky — One-liner of the offseason — John Calipari, at NBA draft: “Let’s rename it the Blue room”

4. UCLA — Chalk up Bruins freshman Shabazz Muhammad as our early favorite for Pac 12 POY

5. Michigan — Gorgeous practice facility helps recruiting of John Beilein, whose eye for talent is notable

6. N.C. State — Wolpack’s recruiting surge must rank among unlikeliest developments in recent memory

7. Syracuse — Jim Boeheim’s final season? Doubt it. Adding an ACC title to that resume = priceless

8. Ohio State — If not for Cody Zeller, Deshaun Thomas would be our pick for preseason Big Ten POY

9. Florida — Meyers Leonard on UF’s All-American candidate, Patric Young: Strongest big he faced as collegian

10. Kansas — Don’t be surprised if Bill Self builds this athletic roster into nation’s top defensive team

11. Michigan State — With a healthy Branden Dawson, Spartans poised to contend for Big Ten title again

12. San Diego State — Established scorers? Check. Intriguing transfers? Check. Steve Fisher’s got it rolling

13. Duke — Ranking Devils this low usually comes back to bite; Memories of C.J. McCollum remain

14. North Carolina — Actual Top 25 will have UNC higher than No. 14; Perhaps new-look Heels deserve it

15. Missouri — Illini mantra for Braggin’ Rights: Win it for Tyler (Griffey), the St. Louis-area native

16. Memphis — Look for Adonis Thomas to earn All-American consideration: Pastner recruiting on top level

17. Gonzaga — Zags boosted by Przemek Karnowski, Polish 7-footer who chose GU over Cal, Duke, KU

18. UNLV — John Groce’s Illini scheduled to return United Center game to Vegas in 2013-14 season

19. Wisconsin — Rave reviews on freshman forward Sam Dekker coming out of Bo Ryan’s Kohl Center

20. VCU — Look for ESPN analyst Stephen Bardo to call some of Shaka Smart’s games in A-10

21. Minnesota — Returning core — plus power-big Trevor Mbakwe — equates to must-win time in The Barn

22. Arizona — Some close to UA program believe Josiah Turner’s exit (to SMU) makes ’Cats better

23. Baylor — Scott Drew’s system goes from big man-centric to guard-driven with point Pierre Jackson

24. Creighton — No one’s better at end of shot clock than All-American first-teamer Doug McDermott

25. Notre Dame — Forget conference affiliation; Big Ten rivals wanted Demetrius Jackson outside Big Ten
