College basketball writer Paul Klee had this to say about the first Top 25 poll of the 2012-13 season:
What stands out about the USA Today preseason poll? The trio at the top and the relative strength of the Big Ten. No. 1 Indiana, No. 2 Louisville and No. 3 Kentucky on paper are the teams with the fewest holes. And the Big Ten is the deepest league. The conference put five teams in the USA Today Top 25 — tops among all conferences. One more team received votes (Minnesota). The strength of the league won’t come as a surprise to John Groce, who spent four years coaching in the Big Ten and 41 years living in its footprint. But it does show how deep the league should be in 2012-13, his first season at Illinois. Depending on what happens at the Maui Invitational, Illinois could play eight teams that appear in this preseason 25. And the Big Ten can affirm its status as the strongest conference by beating the ACC for a fourth straight year in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Look for the AP Top 25 to be released Oct. 26. The News-Gazette once again has a weekly vote.
