Illini grade vs. Colgate: B

Illini grade vs. Colgate: B

Staff writer Jeff Huth's take on Friday's 75-55 win against Colgate at the Assembly Hall:

This is the Brandon Paul the Illini need to see every game. He can be the kind of difference-maker every team needs.

Illinois A
Colgate D

Illini starting trio of Paul, Abrams and Richardson did it all (42 points, 11 assists, 18 rebounds)

Illinois B
Colgate A

Egwu, McLaurin gave Illini rebounding but need to take better advantage of offensive opportunities.

Illinois B
Colgate C

Bertrand made good use of his 21 minutes, and Henry more than doubled his career high for rebounds with seven.

Illinois B
Colgate C-

Groce Era started with a strong first half, a stalemate in the second. Will Illini be focused on Monday versus St. Francis with a trip to Hawaii to follow?

Illini had a 20+ point margin in the 1st half cut to 18 at the half. Instead of maintaining the same effort in the 2nd half and increasing their lead, Illinois took their foot off the pedal in the 2nd half and coasted again like they did against Westchester. This time they did not relax as much as they maintained their lead but the lack of a killer instinct and maintaining their aggressiveness is alarming. Saw too much of that from many of these same players in recent Weber years. Hope that 2nd half swoon is not an ingrained habit learned in past years.

The Groce era kicked off with a victory nonetheless and it is an exciting brand of basketball, that is for sure. Probably too many 3 pointers instead of driving the ball, but hey if they are falling and you have good looks you have to take them. Turnovers were reduced and assists were up which is good. Still much improvement to come as this was 1st official game.

Good job team Illini all the way around !!

Had to read Dan's post above to find out what happened. These Sleepy Gazoo reporters write about everything but the game. Hope the Trib covers most games so we know what actually happened.

Where is the best place to look for an actual report of the game?  I am also baffled by the articles appearing here.
