Our breakdown of the Illini's beatdown of Nebraska on Tuesday:
Illini 71, Huskers 51
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Illinois' D.J. Richardson
The Peorian made sure to shake hands before the game with Eddie Johnson, who called the game for BTN. The ex-Illini's shooting touch must have rubbed off, with Richardson hitting 9 of 14.
BACKCOURT
Illinois B plus
Nebraska C
Brandon Paul struggled with his shooting and Tracy Abrams didn't score a point. But when your senior teammate drops in 30, you are going to get a good grade.
FRONTCOURT
Illinois B
Nebraska D
After struggling last game, Sam McLaurin played 26 quality minutes. Nnanna Egwu finished just short of a double-double. Foul trouble limited Nebraska freshman Shavon Shields.
BENCH
Illinois B plus
Nebraska C minus
Joseph Bertrand and Tyler Griffey combined for 14 rebounds. We wonder why 7-foot, 350-pound Andre Almeida isn't playing offensive line for Bo Pelini.
OVERALL
Illinois B plus
Nebraska D
The players' only meeting is scheduled today for noon. And if it keeps working, there should be one every day. Congrats to John Groce, who picked up his 100th career win.
I feel you can comment about the officiating if you win, especially on the road. They were brutal. Tough night. Bo Borowski is usually pretty good. Not last night. Mike Sanzere is always bad. His streak continues. Right up there with Jim Burr. And the tall, thin guy with the John Groce haircut, just is not very good. He just doesn't seem to get it. Maybe it had something to do with the quality of basketball being played. Thankfully a better rebounding game and a great game by DJ!
