Our breakdown of the Illini's fourth win against a Top 25 team this season:
Illini 57, Gophers 53
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Illinois’ Tyler Griffey
Ahem, Coach, do you think I can get back in the starting lineup? The other theory might be to not mess with success. Coming off the bench, Mr. Clutch continued to drain three-pointers.
BACKCOURT
Illini B minus
Gophers D
D.J. Richardson got Illini back in the game with a burst in the final minutes of the first half. Joe Coleman, who went nuts against Illinois in C-U, hit 1 of 8 shots and scored three points.
FRONTCOURT
Illini C
Gophers B
Sam McLaurin discovered the three-point line and made his first of the season. The Gophers missed injured Rodney Williams, but Trevor Mbakwe produced a double-double.
BENCH
Illini A
Gophers C minus
Griffey and Tracy Abrams, who didn’t start, made big play after big play, none bigger than Abrams’ three-pointer in the final seconds. Gophers needed more help from the reserves.
OVERALL
Illini A minus
Gophers C
Three days after beating No. 1, the Illini went on the road and beat a ranked team. After falling behind by 12 in the first half. Almost as impressive. The ship is officially sailing properly.
New to this site. Why are the individual grades so loosely linked to the overall grade? I was happy to see some defense and 3-point shooting but not sure I would consider this an A game. I think we are capable of much better. Or is any win an A game? Who is Moonpie and why are people talking about him instead of the win?
Moonpie is sort of like Comic Book Guy on The Simpsons. The difference is that instead of having Comic Book Guy's amusing/endearing characteristics, Moonpie appears to have a deeply seated pathological neurosis which causes him to believe all other people's opinions are wrong so they should be insulted and assigned demeaning nicknames. After you read a number of his comments, you'll see the disturbing signs and symptoms.
