PLAYER OF THE GAME: Iowa’s Roy Devyn Marble
With dad looking on, the junior swingman scored a game-high 21 points. He played aggressively and looked like he was having fun in a critical game for Iowa’s NCAA tournament chances.
Backcourt: Iowa B, Illinois C-
Here’s the reality for the Illini: When Tracy Abrams, Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson hit a combined 11 of 39 shots from the field, they are going to lose. Make half and they win.
Frontcourt: Iowa C, Illinois D
Nice to see Sam McLaurin back a couple days after missing most of the Nebraska game with a sprained ankle. Hawkeyes were lucky to survive a rough shooting night by Aaron White (2 of 9).
Bench: Iowa B+, Illinois C-
Tyler Griffey hit a couple of three-pointers, but Joseph Bertrand and Myke Henry were a combined 1 of 8. Yikes. Josh Oglesby hit a pair of three-pointers during Iowa’s clinching run.
Overall: Iowa B, Illinois D+
Illini are down to one chance to impress the tournament selection committee before the Big Ten tournament. And the game is a toughy at Ohio State. Iowa did its duty with the win.
Just like the announcer said, this team has beat the #1 & #2 teams in the polls as well as Butler the only other team to do it, yet cannot even beat Northwestern, Purdue and, Iowa has to be in there too. We have a better record and wins. If we cannot even beat Iowa, how are we going to make it past the first round? Answer is we are not, we seem to have the mental stability of an earthquake, tornado and hurricane combined. I truly feel for Groce and his staff. On the other hand it is great experience for them to have such a diverse set of players that are meek/weak, unstable and so inconsistent mentally. We have the signature loses to prove it. They have the talent and skill to be #1 if they truly wanted, they would have put their big boy pants on, toughened up and did it. We have signature wins to prove that. Yes, it is true that Weber messed them up, he admitted that himself last year before the season was over. Still, this late in the season and we are still dealing with the same issues, sad really. Kudos to Groce and his staff for corralling the mental aspect of this team to get us to the dance, well done, well done indeed.
This was a sad game to watch at this stage in the season. If we get North Carolina in the first round and we hold it together mentally, hey we get a win, if not then it would not matter if we got the #109 Girl Scout team, we would not win.
Hilarious post, you made me laugh out loud. And I agree with you on all points. I just can't for the life of me figure this team out. There's like a cancer on it, I don't know what it is or who is responsible, but they can be so awful at times. I hope this year is the last we see of this type of effort.
Huge ILLINI Fan
But bigger Myke Henry Fan. Just waiting for this season to show what these seniors are about. They might win one game in the tourney then paul is off to d-league Thinking bigger picture,, just want to see Myke Henry on the court because he can help them score more than 50 points.
You know...I agree with you that Myke H could help improve the Illini scoring ability.....but I'm afraid he's also a defensive liability, and even on offense, he seems to get lost, sometimes, and try to do it on his own, rather than as part of the team concept.... No question that MH has incredible athletic ability.....but at this level, that's not enough......
F-. Another game where the seniors just show up and think they can coast to a win. I truly feel for coach Groce. This has to be a maddening group to try and motivate. Especially Brandon Paul.
No sense of urgency, no scrap, no fight. Will these guys ever realize that they can't take plays off? Even games off? They don't have the talent to do that, no matter what they have been led to believe.
It is a simple answer to me. When we play defense like we mean it and play 40 minutes we are a pretty good team. Instead of coming out shooting 3s why don't we go inside and get a high percentage shot to build our confidence early. It is hard to imagine the number of times we have started either the 1st or 2nd half like we are in a fog. It is hard to win when you have at least one half 1 for 16 or 1 for 12 from the field like last night.
