Twenty-three years ago Monday, Illini quarterback Jeff George was selected as the NFL’s No. 1 pick. The Indianapolis Colts chose George over several future Pro Football Hall of Famers, including Cortez Kennedy of Miami (third pick), Emmitt Smith of Florida (17th) and Shannon Sharpe of Savannah State (192nd). George had a good pro career, throwing for nearly 28,000 yards and 154 touchdowns. He leads an outstanding group of top NFL picks that Illinois has produced:
