3 questions for ... ... one-year wonder Sam McLaurin
What are you doing now?
I just got back. I went to California and participated in this AFL combine. It was an opportunity to play some Australian Football. They’re looking for basketball players who can make the transition, and they thought I was one of the guys. They flew me out to California for a few days. It was fun. We did some vertical jumping, some sprints, shuttle runs, a 3K. They taught us a couple skills and did some drills from their game. It was fun, but I think I’m going to stick with basketball.
It’s been more than a month since the season ended. Are you able to put your Illinois experience into words?
I loved every minute of it. We were able to accomplish a lot of things that people said we had no chance to do when I came here. I had people tell me Illinois has been a good program historically but we just might not be able to win. For us to win 23 games, that said a lot about our group of guys and the coaching staff that we had.
What’s next for you?
Well, I’ve got a couple more classes to finish up here, and I’ll be done with my master’s in August. I’ve been talking with my agent, and he tells me I probably won’t know for sure what I’m doing until August. He’s going to line up a couple things for me. He’s talking to some leagues in Europe, so hopefully something good pops up for me. In the meantime, I’m hoping it warms up here. I was down in Myrtle Beach last week, and it was 80 degrees there. It hasn’t reached that here yet, but hopefully soon.
