Darius Paul commits to Illinois
Darius Paul sat in the crowd during Saturday’s Illinois basketball banquet and watched as older brother Brandon Paul accepted the team’s Most Outstanding Player award. Shortly thereafter Darius, who was on an official visit to Illinois this weekend, told the Illini coaching staff and announced on his Twitter account that he would be continuing his collegiate career at Illinois.
“It’s a privilege to be put in this situation I’ve been put in..will be wearing orange & blue for the rest of my college career,” Darius Paul wrote on Twitter late Saturday night.
Paul, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward, was the Freshman of the Year in the Mid-American Conference this past season after averaging 10.4 points and 5.7 rebounds at Western Michigan. Citing changes in the coaching staff at Western Michigan and a desire to play at a higher level, Paul announced last month he was leaving the Broncos. In addition to Illinois, Paul was courted by Florida, Miami (Fla.), USC and Missouri, among others.
Per NCAA transfer rules, Paul will sit out the 2013-14 season and will have three years of eligibility remaining. He is the third transfer to join the Illini since the end of the season. Aaron Cosby (Seton Hall) and Jon Ekey (Illinois State) are also joining Groce’s program. Like Paul, Cosby will sit out next season. Ekey, a fifth-year transfer, will be eligible immediately.
