Darius Paul commits to Illinois

Darius Paul sat in the crowd during Saturday’s Illinois basketball banquet and watched as older brother Brandon Paul accepted the team’s Most Outstanding Player award. Shortly thereafter Darius, who was on an official visit to Illinois this weekend, told the Illini coaching staff and announced on his Twitter account that he would be continuing his collegiate career at Illinois.

“It’s a privilege to be put in this situation I’ve been put in..will be wearing orange & blue for the rest of my college career,” Darius Paul wrote on Twitter late Saturday night.

Paul, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward, was the Freshman of the Year in the Mid-American Conference this past season after averaging 10.4 points and 5.7 rebounds at Western Michigan. Citing changes in the coaching staff at Western Michigan and a desire to play at a higher level, Paul announced last month he was leaving the Broncos. In addition to Illinois, Paul was courted by Florida, Miami (Fla.), USC and Missouri, among others.

Per NCAA transfer rules, Paul will sit out the 2013-14 season and will have three years of eligibility remaining. He is the third transfer to join the Illini since the end of the season. Aaron Cosby (Seton Hall) and Jon Ekey (Illinois State) are also joining Groce’s program. Like Paul, Cosby will sit out next season. Ekey, a fifth-year transfer, will be eligible immediately.

Welcome aboard Darius to Illini Nation!  We've needed a rock solid 4 for years now.  All the best and thanks for selecting Illinois.

Cheers

A good get, it seems, and the Illini need a big because they have almost none.

But we wouldn't know he's a good get by reading any Sleepy Gazoo "reporting." All I recall is that while the Trib listed him at 6-7, the Sleepiest Gazoo listed him as 6-9 -- but today's story demotes him to 6-8. Well, at least they haven't manipulated his weight so far. Maybwe tomorrow he goes from 225 to 250.

Of course that's all you recall. You have very selective memory. First, you accuse Marcus of "cheerleading" about Paul, then you say you wouldn't know he's any good from his reporting. Can't have it both ways, cowpie.

Moonpie, as I pointed out following your stupid comment the other day, your "Sleeping Gonzo" did not write the article to which you refer. Man, you are a pimple on the buttocks of the Illini nation.

Hate to defend Moonpie, but this particular criticism is unfounded. When Moonpie says "Sleepy Gazoo" he's referring to the News-Gazette, and NOT to Loren Tate.

If so, OK; he has generally used that to talk about Tate, but I guess the "N-G goes together. I think I will stick by my acne comment, however.
