Starks makes it official

CHAMPAIGN — Ahmad Starks, a transfer from Oregon State, said Monday he will finish his collegiate career at Illinois.

The story was first reported by ESPN Chicago.

Starks, a point guard who started 73 games during his three-year career at Oregon State, visited the Illinois campus on May 2. The 5-foot-9 guard from Chicago’s Whitney Young, was also considering Bradley.

He’s the sixth player to transfer into the Illinois program since John Groce took over in March of 2012.

Starks averaged 10.2 points and shot 37 percent from behind the three-point line for the Beavers in his three seasons in Corvallis, but decided to transfer closer to home to be near his ailing grandmother in Chicago. Illinois and Starks will petition the NCAA to receive a waiver based on Starks’ grandmother’s condition which would allow him to be eligible for the upcoming season without sitting out a year.

Before the addition of Starks, the Illini had one scholarship to offer for the 2013-14 season.
