Last season, the team motto for John Groce’s basketball-playing Illini was toughness and togetherness. They wore rubber bracelets with the letters “TNT” written on them as a reminder.
This year’s bracelet reads “E1H,” players proudly displaying the orange band at every corner.
“That comes from our SEAL training where our instructor would ask, ‘How many people does it take to win?’ and everyone would answer loudly and clearly, ‘Everybody.’ That’s the E. How many people does it take to screw it up? One. That’s the 1. And when a teammate’s confused, you help him. That’s the H,” Groce explained.
The “TNT” thing went over well with the players last season, and fifth-year senior Joseph Bertrand thinks that will continue with the new slogan.
“It’s just a reminder to everybody what we do and what we’re all about. It just stays in everybody’s minds,” he said.
