PLAYER OF THE GAME
Rayvonte Rice, Illinois
The Champaign native continued to display his scoring prowess, scoring a team-high 13 points and becoming the first UI newcomer to reach double figures in each of his first 10 games since Kiwane Garris.
Abrams’ hot start was a carryover from his dazzling performance against Auburn in Atlanta, and Joseph Bertrand added a scoring touch when needed.
The Illini big men had trouble guarding Connor Boehm and Gabas Maldunas, who each scored 17 points. Jon Ekey’s three-point marksmanship was needed in what turned out to be a close game.
Malcolm Hill had the best game of his career with 10 points and four rebounds, while all the freshmen made solid contributions at both ends against a difficult offense.
The Illini didn’t buckle under late pressure from the Big Green, but Saturday’s game against the high-octane Oregon attack will be a different beast and a true barometer for where the Illini stand at this stage in the season.
