UI grade vs. Ohio State: D

UI grade vs. Ohio State: D

Player of the game
Aaron Craft, Ohio State
Foul trouble cost him some time in the first half, but when the senior guard was on the court, he disrupted the Illini at both ends. His 14 points came on 5 of 6 shooting. And he had three steals, three rebounds and two assists just to make sure.

Backcourt
Ohio State B, Illinois C
Craft didn’t get much scoring help from Lenzelle Smith Jr., but the Zion-Benton product contributed five rebounds. Rayvonte Rice and Tracy Abrams both hit double figures, but it took them 22 shots to do it.

Frontcourt
Ohio State C, Illinois B+
Buckeyes big guy Amir Williams drew the ire of coach Thad Matta when he got outhustled by the Illini for a loose ball. If his team had won, Nnanna Egwu would have been a cinch Player of the Game after his career-best 14 rebounds.

Bench
Ohio State B, Illinois F
To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Marc Loving showed a lot of heart for the Buckeyes with eight key points. Illini subs combined to hit only 1 of 14 shots. In a word: yuck.

Overall
Ohio State B, Illinois D
Offensively, the game might have set basketball back a few years. Dreadful shooting kept the Illini from having more than a three-point lead at halftime. It should have been closer to 12. While the Buckeyes are a lock for the NCAA tournament, the Illini are one step closer to a losing season.

Mr. Egwu played very very hard, in fact probably as hard as he can.

Until we have players that can make relatively "uncontested" lay-ups, 2' shots, etc.............we'll never win again. When we were up 3 or 4 1st half, it should have been 10-12....if we could make LAYUPS or 2' Finger rolls! Either all confidene is lost......or surely FOCUS!

You're better than you are playing!

It's official-

I AM BURNING ALL MY ILLINI APPAREL !

39 points in a game?  Time to break out the brown bags!

Just when you think they can't play any worse, they show you they can!

I feel sorry for John Groce, how can you keep a positive out look after watching this!

i got news for you Groce is the largest part of the problem with the team...they are ALL regressing

griff507 wrote on February 16, 2014 at 12:02 pm

Why is Groce the problem? Is he shooting any of these shots?

These guys just can't shoot! Ekey, Abrams, Bertrand, Nana, even Ray, none of them can shoot the ball well from more than 10 foot away.

I hope the red shirts can shoot, or next year will be more of the same.

So far, only Nunn and Hill show any chance of being able to shoot.

I bet you blamed Weber for the bad shooting his teams had too.

His blame was for recruiting bad shooters, and we still have some of them!
