Darius Paul on the move

Darius Paul on the move

Darius Paul will play basketball in 2014-15. Not in Champaign, but in Port Arthur, Texas.

What will John Groce do to fill the spot? Ask recruiting blogger Matt Daniels about it here

Paul signed a letter of intent to play at Lamar State College.

He was suspended from the Illinois team after his April 22 arrest, for which he was charged with and pleaded guilty to underage drinking. He also admitted to police that he failed two drug tests during the year.

Originally a Western Michigan player, Brandon’s younger brother sat out last season as a transfer.

He will be eligible to return to Illinois after spending one year in junior college.
Calls to Paul’s family and to the Lamar State staff were not returned.

With or without Paul’s move to Lamar State, Illinois has one scholarship available because of Paul’s suspension. If he returns to John Groce’s team, his scholarship could be reinstated.

Before his early-morning troubles on campus, Paul was expected to be an important part of Groce’s third Illinois team.

Paul was a standout in his first season at Western Michigan, earning MAC Freshman of the Year honors while averaging 10.4 points and 5.7 rebounds. The 6-foot-8 forward was a News-Gazette All-Stater at Gurnee Warren. He averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds as a senior.

This serial mope is gone and won't be back and that's likely good. But the Gazoo can pretend he's coming back and will be all-Big Ten.
