Illini men's basketball burning questions: Day 5

What nonconference game might be surprisingly competitive?

Illinois' trip to Las Vegas could be interesting given UNLV has experienced a serious talent infusion in Marvin Menzies' second season as coach, but the one to look out for is the nonconference finale on Dec. 30 against Grand Canyon. "Thunder" Dan Majerle has turned the Antelopes into a winner at the Division I level with 20-plus victories in each of the past two seasons, and having completed their transition period they are now eligible for postseason play. Might get there, too. The 'Lopes have to replace leading scorer DeWayne Russell but return eight of their next top nine scorers, including Joshua Braun (17.5 ppg, 42 percent three-point shooter).

With the Fumbling Illini, how can any game be called surprisingly competitive? Is there some sort of assumption that the team has done something lately?
