Illinois vs. Maryland: What happened, What it means, What's next

What happened

Illinois trailed by as many as 22 points Sunday night against Maryland in the back end of the early Big Ten weekend. So of course the game ended up going to overtime, where the Illini lost for the second time in three days.

What it means

Sunday's roller coaster showed there are two distinctly different Illinois teams. One that can get outplayed in a big way and one that can string stops and scores together to erase even a major deficit. Both need to work on finishing games.

What's next

Conference play gets put on the back burner for another month. Illinois (6-3, 0-2 Big Ten) returns to nonconference action at 7 p.m. Wednesday at State Farm Center against an Austin Peay (4-4) team that's won four of six.
